Heading out tomorrow for Seattle. I’ve reached my goal of raising $6000 for the Juniper Fund – thanks to everyone who helped. You can still make a contribution here.

One month until the climb and I’m training every day. On Rainier, the first day will have a 4700 elevation change from the trailhead to Camp Muir over a distance of 4.2 miles; a very solid 1100 elevation gain per mile. To prepare, I’ve been hiking the PG&E trail three times a week, a 2 hour,  up-and-back route that’s 5.3 miles with an elevation change of 1150 feet. That’s a start. Once a week is Planet Granite’s F10 Alpine class, which focuses on  “long grind intervals as opposed to the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)”. Here’s a typical class:

  • Push a 50 lb. sled 100 feet
  • 10 pull ups
  • 10 kettle ball swings
  • Run 300 yards

Repeat 10x

Once a week, I’m doing a Vinyasa/Yin class for balance and flexibility. To round out training, I’m running twice a week, usually 45′.

This August, I’ll be climbing Mount Rainier to benefit the Juniper Fund, an organization founded by David Morton and Melissa Arnot to address the unmet needs of guides, porters and support workers in the Himalayas of Nepal. My long-standing fascination with Nepal, it’s mountains and people culminated in a trip to the Annapurna region in 2015, six months after a devastating earthquake that left thousands dead.  What I found surprised and humbled me and ultimately inspired this project.

This will be my third trip to Mount Rainier and, hopefully, my second summit. On this trip, we’ll climb to Camp Muir (10,118′), spend a day acclimating and then get an ‘alpine start’ sometime during the night of August 7th. It’ll be a massive day, ascending to the summit at 14,411′ and then all the way back down to the Paradise trail head  at 5,400′. Along the way, it’ll be a technical climb with plenty of exposure and crevasses, requiring the team to be roped up high on the mountain.

I’m over half-way to my goal of raising $6000 for the Juniper Fund. You can make a contribution here.
